Another great insight into the truth behind unfettered Democracy. The Greek word means rule by the people and in those days it probably had meaning as their state like so many others was ruled by other forms or government which were mostly the wealthy land barons and the military. Nothing has changed much since those early days; like the Magna Carta (The Great Charter of 1215) was brought about by the need for common law (hence the House of Commons). There are many forms of democracy it may behoove us to discuss each as a subject as the subject of DEMOCRACY alone is way too broad to have a reasonable debate on its merits.

RobertSRQ

Unfortunately, as much as I disagree with the quote, it is accurate with regard to our use of democracy. Oscar Wilde, like so many other famous orators were cynics when it came to the definition and practice of democracy; the quote is accurate with regard to the manipulation of democracy. Democracy is used by those in position of power and influence to deceive and castigate those who disagree. It’s not democracy bludgeoning the people by the people for the people but our greed and licentiousness born from direct democracy. Representative democracy is a more accurate discretion of the democracy most nations practice. So, back to Oscar,s original statement, yes, democracy with regard to majority rule is at the crux of this discussion.

Sorry fellows BR is right on, just think about what he is saying and take away your personal feelings. He is saying simply that envy is the driver not that it is bad or good - it is indeed the basis for Democracy - I need provided what I do not have.

RobertSRQ

Obviously the republicans learn well and have taken up the reins..

RobertSRQ

Yes, yes, yes... Our votes are being stolen as we speak - our counting is a mockery - we should demand all machines are totally verified by top experts from both parties and not just by the incumbent -- it is a disgrace to all Americans the way in which we have all be hoodwinked by criminals (politicians) in the name of technology -- the same now is happening in the name of security and again we will be apathetic.

RobertSRQ

This was what TJ first wrote then he changed it to the above. "I do not believe there is one native citizen of the US who wishes to dissolve this union: I am confident there are few native citizens who wish to change it's republican features." I'm glad he revised the statement. Waffler, all he is saying is that we all have a right to our opinion and to question authority without abuse.

RobertSRQ

Waffler, how ever you slice and dice the statement is correct. Otherwise we should just revert to mob rule. Thank you Archer.

RobertSRQ

What a fool - and that's being polite...

RobertSRQ

well said Waffler

Sorry! I forgot to add; we don't have a government in American we have politicians who are on the payroll of corporations that is not a GOVERNMENT. We have a right-wing media that fights for its life by reporting news that supports the agenda of its advertisers, we have a possible Republican president who wants a 100 years of war (I would be more concerned who is VP is). I do not buy what the media or this quasi government tells me to buy -- since I have stopped buying food in supermarkets I am saving money and feel healthier -- I have never bought food or clothing from any ad. Obviously America would go broke if they depended on the likes of me. Waffler, well done, your points are well taken in the honesty they were meant.

RobertSRQ

Then why do we have the costliest healthcare system in the world, why do we have over one million children abuse each year, why does the government take our homes if we don't pay our taxes, why do we have 70 million Americans living on the poverty level - give me a break - this country needs a change and perhaps being more compassionate instead of fighting stupid wars that deplete our coffers - we are fast becoming a third world country much like the others, that all they have is a mighty army. This country is run buy corrupt politicians, corporate greed, theocratic wannabe's -- we need CHANGE and now.

RobertSRQ

We dish out $millions to oil companies, we already ahave a signle payor healthcare system for 120 million Americans, Washington politicians get healthcare for life, and the list goes on. So, what's all the fuss about?

RobertSRQ

Excellent Archer and the quotes good too - if only we practiced what we preach..

RobertSRQ

I think more of a communication initiative is required rather than centralizing control. You have no control over sovereignty, both individually and nationally, when you centralize nations. The cooperation and sharing in the problem-solving process should be transparent and made easily accessible to all nations. The manipulation of the monetary system behind closed doors and the abuse of a country’s government should also be included in this category of tyrants and despots.

RobertSRQ

Perfect, with the minor exception of the word "God-given"

RobertSRQ

Wow! are you sure Obama didn't write this. With our help he may do it...

RobertSRQ

Excellent! Unfortunately, administration manipulates the government. The government of our country is at the behest of rogues and unless they are ousted they can perform irreparable damage. Indeed, the true patriots are those who question authority and denounce corruption in government. Those who blindly follow the Commander in Chief without argument are traitors.

RobertSRQ

Logan's quote from the 1976 film Network hits the mark right-on... Kafka would be proud

RobertSRQ

How does individual deception, fraud, and being unethical fit into this?

RobertSRQ

Indeed! look at your history books why he didn't want to sign the treaty at Yalta. Churchill wanted a free Europe and pressed for free elections and democratic governments in Eastern Europe. If Roosevelt agreed, Stalin would have had no choice as the US and GB had its forces in place as leverage.

RobertSRQ

Manipulating the masses is achieved by many means, primary organized religion, fear, debt, and keeping the population dumb – hence the church, the new bogyman terrorism, and the lack of funding education. The true perpetrators are those who press buttons behind closed doors and what is even more concerning is that they are in league with each other as their interests are the same, money, power, and control. As Mike said we will never know the truth behind 9-11 or the other calamitous results of decision made by those with no faces, not on behalf of the people, but initiated by those cowards who never show their identity - the last line said it all.

RobertSRQ

Well said Archer. The only way out of this milieu is to revert back to basics and let good reason be our master - unfortunately we are in a system so corrupt that few can see a clear path to honesty. The church, our government and corporations, have infested our hearts and minds and we no longer think for the happiness and well-being of parishes and constituents. A country implodes when it no longer believes in its only real asset – its people.

RobertSRQ

What the hell is the point of an election putting people into power and then when they make an absolute mess of things blame it on the socialists or the liberals - for heavens sake wake up America - stop blaming those not at the helm. If you want to be proactive then come up with constructive suggestions not a barrage of insults and pointing the finger. If you want to change the system be part of it and change it from within. If you want a different school system get the parents to unite and create their own schools - but please do not educate kids at home in a vacuum. I’m not a parent but you folks out their with kids unless you change the system they are heading for a really rough ride. We must bring back ethics and philosophy to our schools – we must bring back the teaching of self-discipline, all of which are the stalwarts of enlightenment – without self-discipline there is no freedom. The reason why education gets little attention is because the feds want you dumb, they want you dependent on all their toys, their banks, their unenlightened rhetoric. We the people are being raped by the an arsenal of weapons; income and property taxes, schools and college fees, insurance (health/property/auto/), utility bills, the cost of food – we don’t even own our own home. The tax and banking system are making slaves of us – sorry, they have made slave of us. We must get out away from the comfort of our homes and start to take our country back, we must start by creating our own schools our own banks our own governance/government our own future – GOOD LUCK! LETS DO IT! The internet is out there let's use it... P.s. great comments guys and girls
