The key here is detachment then just sit back and listen.

Alas in Socrates case it was to his detriment - great quote It's not the conscience she is referring too it's the Atman.

I'm not quite sure what he's getting at...

Yes, JUST DO IT! this was my quote for today: Attitude is far more than how you react to others or situations – it’s a way. A positive attitude is something very deep within you that keeps you clear of obstacles like negative thoughts, anger, pride, prejudice, and indifference. Attitude is like the sun that rises in the morning, the smell of nature, the dust in your nostrils, and the unfathomable ability to do the same thing day in day out. But, most of all, it’s the great joy it returns to you – for attitude is the gate to happiness and spiritual feedom. The greatest attribute afforded good attitude is the Thoughtfulness and kindness you have towards all creatures, for without them attitude is just a word written in the sand.

Logan and Archer you are missing the point - Confucius was referring to himself only. It is irrelevant if the thought is good or bad outside of him. The substance is there for those to grasp - it is always subjective, everything is. Twinkie or no Twinkie, what matters is in your heart, is it good or is it bad and that's all one can ever hope for. You can apply your logic, though misguided, to any subject - who is to say your love is good or bad or your ethics moral or immoral - Excellent quote.

American people should hold their heads in shame - we killed American Indians for land, we drove them out of their territories (Trail of Tears), we lied to them, we gave them diseases; we shoved them into camps like cattle. In Jamestown it started nicely until we got greedy - the usual story I'm afraid. So don't give me all that crap about how nice it is that they have welfare - what baloney... And now we tell them it's OK to build Casinos so that the white man can take what's left of their heritage. Good reply Archer

Change is always inevitable - as Einstein said "Change is the only constant factor in the Universe"

RobertSRQ

It's not that the truth is not spoken, it's that the truth is not recognized.

I believe this quote is taken out of context and does not refer to being taught but refers to the establishment and being cloned by the government and church. Self is the most important understanding when realizing a state of peace and spiritual grace. Self is the gateway to eternity through which you become one with the Universe. Self can pierce the impenetrable; it is the foundation of Universal grace.

Another statement coming from a person whose schooling was confused and truamatic so much so it turned him into a fellow athiest (OK, agnostic).

RobertSRQ

O what an elitist society we have especially coming from Spinoza who was inspired while at school to write philosophy and learn Latin. I believe this statement comes from his radical side as he was against most establishments.

This is exactly what's wrong with the system - I presume Cubberley was being facetious. Bryan and Ken, you must be joking... It's government and corporate America that wants to hammer you into shape and then spit you out. To err is forgivable but to blindly go where other sheeple follow is not so forgivable. When will we look into the mirror and realize we are far from the best in most things - the only thing propping up the America economy is our big Military machine and that must be kept going at the expense of all else, including education. As Carlin said 'you are not a member of the club'. The subjugation of masses (including our educational system) has been orchestrated by government in cahoots with the Fed and big business - I wouldn't exactly call them socialists.

Together isn't fascism (centralized control) and progressive (social reform) an oxymoron? Isn't right-wing conservatism (against change) and a theocracy more closely aligned to fascism? And, the need to change the status quo more aligned with being a progressive?

RobertSRQ

It's a cynical statement (may of even been a joke) - if it weren't for our taxes he would have a job as our taxes pay the teachers and the teachers pay his wages. Hopefully, the teachers have the children at their best interest and therefore it is a mute point.

RobertSRQ

Don't let the sheeple get to smart as they may see the Truth and how they are manipulated on a daily basis; and how their savings and pensions are stolen by government and big business; and how they are fed just enough news to keep them uninformed; and why wars are started; and why we put dictators in power; and how, how, how...

What absolute paranoia

Waffler, your intention was admirable. When Stuart wrote this statement it may have had some validity but things change and this most definitely is one of them. Since the first days of communities gathering their resource for the first school house things have not changed one eyeota - what has changed is government and our selfish attitude and indifference towards public education. These teachers in the public school system do a great job and deserve much praise many can go into the private sectors but refuse and for very good reason for it is there that clones are made and the status quo enforced. I agree, our educational system needs reform but its not beacuse of the system it's because of government and corporate America who refuse to fund the system - look back at yesterdays quote from Rockefeller and its tells the story. By the way Jim, it's just not juat

The Huxley's - Wow, what a family, especially his brother Julian. To have been alive then and to have met so many great writers and artists must have been a real trip (LSD). Brave New World reminds me of the American Robert Ardrey and his book Territorial Imperative. Yes, this is a great quote and one of many from such a celebrated humanist. It seems sad that most are no longer with us but their memories and writings remain and will always inflame the ambers of our imagination - all of them are a part of me. Who out there is able to summarize this great period in thought and literature? Perhaps Gore Vidal...

Mike, I can think of a few other words...

Sorry, I forgot to add, our President went to a private college - I say no more

Waffler, top marks - they say if you wait long enough before judgment that judgment is no longer an issue - great statement, though I do wish they would include Ethics. Our Riverview High Schools in Sarasota has some of the brightness kids - I had a delegation for twenty different countries and the kids from that school nearly had every language covered. Booker High, another school in Sarasota has won many national awards in music and spelling. Public schools are not the problem we are.

Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all... The dumbing of America is not just in our schools but in our culture - religion (the far-right wrack jobs), television, greed, and the media being the primary culprits.

Wow! what a great quote. Letters and Essays are just words on paper, what really counts in life are your actions and how you can help those in need. Most letters and other writings are just products on the shelf, and most gather dust - give me a person that goes out into the world and does good things more than a man of letters.
