Knowledge of truth also sets the captive free, being subject to no one or thing. From a slaves perception, being subject to law and justice is a fearful thing. Scriptural fear of God would be more accurately translated 'respect God'. It's like that Dylan song: "It may be the devil or it may be the Lord, but you're gonna have to serve somebody." Even a freeman is subject to the Laws of Nature, which would probably be a better expression.
