The moneychangers were bankers and lenders and the rest were merchants. These are not evil people, just free traders trading goods brought to market.. I don't believe they were literally in the Temple. Jesus is attacking the worship of trade above servility to God. Jesus was a populist appealing to envy and people's loathing of the rich.
